The fight is nearly a month away but it’s not too early to talk up the biggest fight of 2011. I have already stated why “Sugar” Shane Mosley is more than a live underdog against Manny Pacquiao. And here I will tell you why I think he’s going to defeat Pacquiao next month.

I almost had you there for a second, huh?

I don’t have the chutzpah to pick the Mosley upset, so I am going to go with my old reliable fight prediction helper. It highlights many of Mosley’s advantages but it also tells me why it’s still hard to bet against “Pac Man” in this one. You need to know why? Just read below.

Each fighter’s competition has been world-class, so this key prediction criteria is a “push.” In addition, the fight locale of Las Vegas, Nevada offers neither man a discernible advantage. Mosley’s contingent will likely be out-flanked by Pacquiao’s and his legion of Filipino (and other) fans, but he’s no big fight neophyte. The setting will not be unsettling for “Sugar.”

Mosley’s major advantage is the fact that he’s the naturally bigger and stronger man, as he’s fought a significant portion of his career at 147 pounds and 154 pounds. Shane also is very adept at utilizing his upper-body strength and vicious body punches while “in-fighting.” If you need proof, look no further than his stoppage of Antonio Margarito. He is also a slightly better defensive fighter.

As in just about every one of his fights, Pacquiao is faster than his opponent. It’s a rare situation for Mosley, but he’ll be at a speed deficit here. I also give Pacquiao advantages in punching power and ring generalship. Years ago the prospect of my claim would have been suspect, but Pacquiao’s meteoric rise in power and skill as he’s moved up in weight, combined with Mosley’s declining powers, give Pacquiao a significant edge in these critical areas.

Unlike some, I truly expect Pacquiao-Mosley to be one of the more exciting fights of the last 12 months. Sure, Mosley is past his best, but his considerable pedigree and Pacquiao’s “ever-so-slight” slippage in recent fights (he got touched a tad too much to my liking against the “slow-as-molasses” Antonio Margarito).

However, when it is all said and done, I expect Manny Pacquiao to place another Hall of Fame scalp on his mantle after he defeats Shane Mosley (UD 12) in one of the more exciting fights we will have seen in awhile. Mosley will survive some scary moments, but so will Pacquiao.

Less than a month to go before the Pacquiao vs Mosley mega-fight will happen at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In a recent interview by Boxingscene.com on Sugar Shane, the Pomona native believes that he can exploit Pacquiao’s weaknesses when they fight on May 7.


Every day, Shane becomes more and more confident as the fight draws near. He is currently training in Big Bear, California with his Coach Naazim Richardson.

"We all have flaws, but are we able to capitalize on those flaws? With Pacquiao, he throws so many punches; he fights with so much fury. But I think I will be able to exploit them. I think it's my speed, the power, even my size, will make it easy to get to those spots." according to Mosley in his interview.

Manny Pacquiao is expected by many to win the fight. He has been on a 13-win streak and Mosley is no different from the recent fighters Manny faced in terms of power and speed.

Sugar Shane is an entertaining boxer because he throws a lot of punches just to get inside the defense of his opponent and throw his own flurry. Pacquiao also do the same thing, which is vert entertaining to watch for a boxing match. “We all know that Pacquiao has flaws”, said Mosley. He will capitalize on those errors and subject Manny to hard fight and possibly pull an upset and get the WBO Welterweight Belt.

Mosley, in most of his professional boxing career, has been fighting as a Welterweight and Lightweight and has won most of his fight in those divisions. He is 3-division champion and definitely knows how to fight in a championship match against a hard-hitting opponent. Shane is the only boxer to defeat Oscar dela Hoya twice.

Pacman’s weakest spot is his chin and mid-section based on his previous fights several years ago. If Pacquiao throws combinations, Shane Mosley will also throw his own leaving both of their defenses vulnerable to a KO punch. Mosley is a more accurate puncher compared to Antonio Margarito and he has the ring intelligence comparable to Manny. He loves to fight fire with fire. On May 7, let’s see if Shane can exploit the weaknesses of Pacquiao and win.

The only man to serve up two defeats to Oscar De La Hoya, both in world championship fights. Mosley’s resume, also boasts victories over world champions Fernando Vargas (twice), Ricardo Mayorga, Antonio Margarito, John John Molina, Jesse James Leija, Philip Holiday and Luis Collazo.


Mosley’s recent record is 2-2-1 and he is 39 years old. Mosley, hasn't won since Margarito and in May, Mosley lost a lopsided unanimous decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr. Four months later, Mosley lumbered through a draw against junior-middleweight Sergio Mora.
Shane Mosley has been slowing down for years. He was a terrific lightweight, but as he moved up and got older, he has slowed down and hasn’t been as good or powerful. He struggled with Ricardo Mayorga in 2008, barely winning when he caught the powerful and tired slugger in the final round. He struggled with a shot Fernando Vargas in 2006. He has been labeled “over the hill” for sometime.

That seems to the way the winds are blowing as to the next fight for Manny Pacquiao in the wake of Saturday’s stunningly easy knockout win over Ricky Hatton.

According to the Manila Times, Pacquiao said he wants to battle Mayweather in what will undoubtedly be the fight of the decade. Mayweather announced his own comeback just before Pacquiao’s fight.

“I like to fight him. I can fight anybody,” Pacquiao told the Times.

A Mayweather fight makes sense, in that Floyd Jr. retired as the regarded pound-for-pound champ, a throne since taken by Pacquiao. But Mayweather first must beat Pacquaio’s old rival Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18.

That Mayweather agreed to that fight apparently surprised the Pacquiao camp, who say they are unlikely to rest until the super-fight. Pacquio mentioned returning to the ring in the late fall.

“A busy fighter is a good fighter, we’re not going to wait around,” Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach said. “Mayweather just had to wait one day and this fight could’ve happened. I think he’s scared of Manny.”
Aside from Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, Sugar Shane Mosley and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. are also being floated as possible opponents for Pacquiao.

Mosley congratulated Pacquiao late Saturday, then quickly lobbied to get that fight.

“Let’s get it done,” Mosley said. “I don’t see a reason they’d want to fight Cotto when I’m the champion who beat [Antonio] Margarito, who beat Cotto. It’d be a classic fight [against Pacquiao]. We both have good hand speed and power and I think that fans want to see the best fight the best.”

According to the L.A. Times, Team Pacquiao doesn’t want to fight either Mosley or Cotto at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds, and would demand that either move down to a catch-weight bout of 143 pounds.

Hatton, meanwhile, is being urged by many to retire. That second-round KO in Las Vegas that left the 30-year-old Briton requiring a brain scan.

“I’m so desperately sorry for you all,” Hatton told his followers. “I thought I would win but it went wrong. I’m OK but so upset for all the supporters who came out here.”

About 20,000 fans are thought to have made the trip from Britain to see Hatton fight.
